Felicity Crawford - Summer Academic Coordinator

Felicity CrawfordFelicity Crawford is an Assistant Professor of Special Education in the Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities Program. She brings the perspective of an experienced preK-12 educator who has worked for many years, and at every grade level, in racially and culturally diverse classroom settings. Prior to coming to Wheelock, Dr. Crawford served as Project Coordinator on a previous project at the University of Massachusetts Boston where she successfully recruited, supervised, and taught several cohorts of master level students seeking dual licensure in special and general education at the secondary level. Her research interests include teacher ideology, the social context of urban special education, and pathways towards effectively transforming the experiences of students from diverse racial, cultural and linguistic backgrounds in urban special education classrooms.

Teresa Fernandes – Geometry and Algebra Instructor

Teresa FernandesTeresa Fernandes has just over 20 years of experience in teaching mathematics, since completing her degree in Math and Education at Brown University. She has taught a broad range of courses, including the traditional college preparatory sequence of algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, etc. and several integrated courses that also incorporate many other topics such as statistics and discrete math. As an academic coach and a tutor, she has helped numerous students to succeed on the SAT, GED and MCAS. Her approach to teaching is interactive and inquiry based, always striving to make difficult topics understandable.


Tamecia Jones – Earth Science and Biology Instructor

Tamecia Jones Tamecia Jones is a native of VA, earning a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and a MA in Learning, Design, and Technology from Stanford University before settling in Boston to blend her love of education and engineering with young people. She has worked with museums, summer programs, and universities across the country, and recently taught for three years in Boston middle schools, Uphams Corner Charter and Young Achievers Science and Math. She is teaching Earth Science and Biology this summer, and is ecstatic about being back in the classroom.


Ms. K – Critical Reading and Writing Instructor

Katani A. SumnerAs a native Bostonian, Katani began her academic journey as a METCO student in the Lexington Public Schools for grades 1-12. The wonderful academic exposure in Lexington propelled her on to an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Brown University. Ms. Sumner’s first position in education was as the METCO Academic Liaison/Teacher in the Weston Public Schools where the achievement gap for students of color became very apparent. The revelation of this achievement disparity created a determination in Katani to become a Reading Specialist. The next stop on her journey was a graduate degree from Harvard University and a certification as a Reading Teacher.

Katani has worked in the capacity of Literacy Specialist at the Boys & Girls Club in Roxbury, the Young Achievers Pilot School in Jamaica Plain, as well as the Peirce Elementary School in Newton. In her current role as the METCO Counselor at Newton South High School Katani is determined to empower her students with confidence derived from academic competence and the establishment of the habit of effective effort. As the Director of Newton South’s first Gospel Choir she is thrilled to also provide an opportunity for a diverse group of students to come together to appreciate a unique American art form. Katani has been happily married for 23+ years to B. Chris Sumner and is the proud parent of Kandice, Kortney and Kristian.


Alma E. Wright – Introduction to Teaching Instructor

Alma E. WrightAlma E. Wright has been an elementary school teacher in the Boston Public Schools for over forty years. She has a B.S. in Education from Knoxville College and a M.S. in Education from Boston State College. She has taken graduate courses at Harvard University, Boston University School of Education, Bridgewater State College, Lesley University, and Wheelock College. She also attended New England School of Photography for five years.

Ms. Wright is a teacher who loves the classroom and is dedicated to children. She works hard to ensure that all children receive the best educational foundation possible. To that end, she was an instructor and supervisor of student teachers at Wheelock College for 10 years, an instructor of adult basic education for 20 years, a consultant for IBM, Lego, and Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley, a computer instructor for United South End Settlements, and a math instructor for the Boston Public School Summer Review School.

In February 2008 Ms. Wright received the Legacy of Public Education Award given by the Central Boston Elder Services. She has also received awards from the Black Ministerial Alliance of Greater Boston, Inc., Rev. Dr. Ozzie Edwards Award, the Milken Family Foundation’s National Educator Award, A World of Difference Teacher Award, Henry L. Shattuck Public Service Award, Boston Works Teacher Honor Roll, Boston and Vicinity Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. Educator of the Year, and the Gold Apple Award.


Christopher Mathias – Digital Storytelling Instructor

Christopher MathiasChristopher Mathias has been involved with TRIO programs since becoming a McNair Scholar in college. In addition to being a Coast Guard Veteran and lawyer, he is a doctoral student who teaches Law, Policy and Society at Northeastern University. He is interested in state government and social policy and, to a lesser extent, national security law and policy. His work history is diverse and ranges from McDonald's to the Senate Judiciary Committee. He is honored to be this summer's Digital Storytelling Instructor.


Summer Residential Advisors, 2008

Natalie Gillard - Resident Director

Natalie GillardNatalie recently finished her Master of Arts degree at Lesley University in Race and Ethnic Relations. She received her undergraduate degree from Lasell College in Legal Studies and Psychology. As an undergraduate student, Natalie was involved as a Resident Assistant, a member of the Multicultural Student Union and taught First Year Seminar. Natalie currently works for Wheelock College in the Office Campus and Diversity Programs and the Office of Residence Life. She serves as the Coordinator of Student Leadership and Diversity Programs and as the Resident Director for Pilgrim Hall.


John Bernier

John BernierA native of Boston, John Bernier is no stranger to advancing the community around him. Recently he graduated from Boston University's School of Management where he concentrated in Marketing. Currently he serves as Director of Marketing for Collegeboxes, LLC. In his senior year John began his own company: Gospel Management Group which aims to promote gospel artists to new plateaus across America. He currently serves as a Residential Advisor in the Upward Bound program and truly believes in providing to not only the intellect of the students but also their character.


Nicole Cohen

Nicole CohenNicole Cohen is a recent graduate from Simmons College where she double-majored in Art and Spanish and minored in Special Education. Nicole played for the Simmons Women’s Basketball team for four years. In her spare time she enjoys playing sports, creating art, and going to the beach as much as possible. She also loves traveling to new places.


Shelvia English

Shelvia EnglishShelvia is a native Bostonian and graduated from Boston Latin Academy in 2005. She is currently a Wheelock student and will be graduating in May 2009. Shelvia is majoring in Human Development with a focus in Psychology and a minor in American Studies. After graduating from Wheelock, she plans to pursue a master's in Higher Education Administration. Her career goals include working in the department of Residence Life and Student Activities. Shelvia’s passion for student development and higher education drives her to be a part of the Wheelock Upward Bound program.


Adrian Hoquee

Adrian HoqueeAdrian Hoquee has an intrinsic desire to make a difference in the community around him. As an undergraduate at Boston University, Adrian was heavily involved on his campus, serving as both a Resident Assistant and Student Advisor, in addition to holding executive board positions with various student organizations—most notably, Vice President for the NAACP Boston University Chapter. Currently, he works as a Staff Assistant/Event Coordinator for Harvard University's Office for Faculty Development and Diversity and serves as a committed Big Brother and mentor to young men throughout the Boston area. As an RA in the Upward Bound program, Adrian is determined to see that every student continues to grow and excel not only academically, but also as individuals in today's society.


Danny Soto

Danny SotoDanny Soto is currently a senior at University of Massachusetts Amherst studying for an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice. After graduating he plans on becoming a police officer or an FBI agent. Danny’s ultimate goal is to become a Criminal Lawyer.


Kandice Sumner

Kandice SumnerKandice Sumner recently graduated from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia where she received her B.A. in English Language and Literature. She is currently matriculating in the Boston Teacher Residency program where she will be receiving her M.Ed in Secondary Education in English Language Arts and is excited to begin her teaching career in Boston Public Schools in September 2009.

Michaela "Kayla" Byrnes

Michaela "Kayla" ByrnesKayla, who is originally from upstate New York moved to Boston to attend Emmanuel College. She recently graduated in May with a degree in Spanish and a concentration in Secondary Education. This is her second summer working for an Upward Bound program and she is very excited to be a part of Wheelock's efforts to train young teachers for the future.


Jevon Hall

Jevon HallJevon Hall is currently an Academic Counselor for the Wheelock College Upward Bound Program. A native Bostonian, he graduated from Another Course to College (ACC) in 2007. Shortly after graduating, he was offered a job as a 9th and 10th grade AVID tutor for ACC. Jevon is presently a sophomore at Bunker Hill Community College and has plans to transfer to Wheelock College in January 2009. Jevon’s ultimate goal is to become a history teacher in the Boston Public Schools.


Chevon Harrison

Chevon HarrisonChevon is an only child and grew up in Roxbury, MA. She graduated from Madison Park Technical Vocational High School and is the second in her family to attend college. While in high school Chevon was a participant in the TEACH Boston program, a similar program to Teacher Bound. Chevon is currently a senior at Wheelock College majoring in American Studies and Elementary Education. Chevon was actively involved in the three-week Wheelock College 2007 service learning trip to West Africa. From this experience, she has gained a better understanding of herself as an African American woman and most importantly a new found respect for and interest in other cultures. Her future plans include teaching in Boston public schools, obtaining a doctorate degree in American Studies and teaching as a college professor at Wheelock College.


Trisha Mah

Trisha MahTrisha recently moved to Boston from California to attend Wheelock College where she is currently a graduate student in the Leadership in Community Education and Human Services Program. She attended Saint Mary's College of California for her undergraduate degree in Integral (Western Classics), where she had the opportunity to study abroad at Oxford University. This experience gave her new perspective on American culture and greater respect for its diversity. Before moving to Boston, Trisha worked with urban youth of different ages as a tutor and mentor at various Bay Area organizations. In addition to her academic counselor role, Trisha provides administrative support in the running of the program. She is excited to be a part of this unique program and serve our future educators. She plans to continue working with youth in similar programs and organizations that promote inclusion of all cultures and provide access to quality education.
