Program Highlights

Teacher Bound Upward Bound concluded its second summer residential program. Highlights below:

  • 46 Boston students: 65% female and 34% male
  • Students attend 19 Boston Public schools
  • 7 Teacherbound students are in the METCO program
  • 100% of the Teacher Bound Scholars live in Boston
  • 11 rising sophomores and 24 rising juniors
  • 73% of our rising juniors have all been placed in Honors Math, English or History classes as a result of their performance in our summer institute courses.
  • 60% of our rising sophomores have all been placed in Honors Math, English or History classes as a result of their performance in our summer institute courses.
  • We finished the 2008-2009 year with 14 of our students on the Honor roll and 17 missed it by one or two grades.
  • 45% of the Upward Bound Summer Institute staff were Wheelock faculty or students.

Summer 2009 Program Components

Academic Coursework: 180 hours (36 hours per week x 5 weeks)

  • Math: Pre-Calculus, Algebra II or Geometry
  • Science: Chemistry, Biology, or Physics
  • Literacy: Critical Reading and Critical Writing
  • Introduction to Teaching II
  • Multi Media Literacy

Academic Tutoring: 90 hours (18 hours per week x 5 weeks)

  • Each student registered in tutoring

Field Experience: 50 hours per student x 46 students for a total of 2300 service hours. Each Teacher Bound Scholar was placed in one of the following sites as a teaching assistant:

  • The Harbor School – a Boston Public School Middle School in Dorchester Massachusetts,
  • Parkside Christian Academy in Jamaica Plains Massachusetts,
  • Paige Academy in Roxbury Massachusetts
  • Parental Outreach
  • 5 parent/student potluck cultural dinners

Summer Staff

Resident Assistants

Resident Assistants oversee the dormitory and monitor program participants in the evening and overnight and are responsible for enforcing the Wheelock College dormitory policies. RAs will also coordinate recreational and cultural activities for program participants and provide one-on-one personal/academic counseling support. Recreational activities should include gender specific programming, cultural outings, life skills instruction, and wellness activities.

Teacher Assistants

45% of the Upward Bound Summer Institute staff were Wheelock faculty or students.

Teaching Assistants serve as classroom helpers and are responsible for helping students that are struggling with classroom material. Teaching Assistants provide assistance to summer academic instructors in the classroom and provide support to students during their field placements. Teaching Assistants are responsible for their individual cohorts throughout the day and ensure that they reach their destinations in a timely fashion. TA’s will be provided housing and will be required to live on campus.
